Is it possible to use the freemarker syntax on workflow emails?

Specifically I am trying to list all the serial numbers from an invoice on an email generated from a workflow running on the transaction.

I can list a single result using {itemnumber.inventorynumber} , however multiple lines are not listed.

I have tried to use the freemarker syntax but even basic $ references do not work, and or do not seem to work from the custom email template on the email action.

Do custom email’s use different syntax from document>templates>email templates?
